the september rush

Why the September Rush at Work is Counter to Our Human Needs—and 3 Ways to Manage It

Whether you have children or not, most of us feel the effects of the school summer holidays. When September arrives, the structure of work life returns. People are suddenly back at it, with emails and phone calls flying in, requesting and even demanding things.

Yet, while the working world picks up pace, nature in the northern hemisphere tells a different story. Things are slowing down: nights grow longer, leaves begin to fall, animals prepare for hibernation, and birds migrate.

It can feel overwhelming to enter autumn with this sudden increase in intensity, especially when our natural instincts align more with the slowing pace of the world around us.

Here are three key ways to mitigate this shift:

  1. Set Boundaries & Manage Expectations We often feel compelled to do everything immediately to avoid letting others down. However, in my experience, clear and honest communication makes all the difference—most people don't mind waiting when they understand the situation.

  2. Prioritize Time for Yourself Autumn is a perfect time for reflection and pausing. Set aside time for outdoor walks (without distractions like phones), meditation, or slow movement practices like yoga or qigong. This helps you connect with nature's rhythm and stay grounded in the present moment.

  3. Eat Seasonally Eating what is naturally in season can connect your body and mind to the time of year. Visit a local farm shop and enjoy produce like carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, beans, kale, and broccoli. Cook a hearty dish that aligns with the season's energy.

In my work with founders, I help them understand the natural rhythms of their lives, businesses, and the world. Knowing when to speed up, slow down, or pause is crucial. My monthly event, Your Away Day, offers a perfect antidote to the heightened pace of this time of year. It's designed with human needs at its core, fostering an environment where the best work can happen.
